EIS process

Purpose: Evaluate alternative approaches to the project that might reduce or avoid negative impacts.

• Assess both direct (immediate) and indirect (long-term) effects of the project on the environment.
• Consider cumulative impacts, i.e., the combined effect of the project and other existing or planned developments in the area.
• Evaluate different impact categories such as:
  • Air and water quality
  • Habitat disruption and biodiversity loss
  • Cultural and heritage impacts
  • Health and safety risks
  • Social and economic effects

Purpose: Revise the draft EIS based on public comments and finalise the report.

Activities:

• Incorporate relevant comments and provide additional information or clarification where needed.
• Finalize the EIS, ensuring that it reflects a balanced and comprehensive assessment of all issues.

Purpose: Make a decision on whether the project should proceed based on the EIS.

Activities:

• Decision-makers (e.g., government agencies, project proponents) review the final EIS and determine whether to approve, reject, or modify the project.
• The decision will often include conditions to ensure that mitigation measures are followed and impacts are minimized.

Purpose: Ensure that the project is implemented as planned and that mitigation measures are effectively carried out.

Activities:

• Establish a monitoring program to track the project's environmental performance.
• Review and update the EIS if there are significant changes to the project or unforeseen impacts.
• Ensure compliance with environmental regulations and commitments made in the EIS.
