Why Marulan?

Marulan is close to vital infrastructure, including the Moomba to Sydney gas pipeline and a TransGrid electricity switchyard. These connections allow for efficient fuel supply and power transmission. The site has been chosen to support reliability in the national electricity market, particularly during peak demand or when renewable energy sources are insufficient.β€―β€―

Why are you pursuing this project now?

We are advancing the project now due to evolving energy needs and changed regulatory support for gas projects. The urgency stems from the anticipated closure of coal-fired power stations, and the increasing demand for reliable energy sources to complement intermittent renewable generation.β€―β€― β€―

Although the project received planning approval in 2009, the opportunity to develop the Tallawarra site meant that the need to build a new gas fired power station at Marulan did not immediately eventuate.β€― β€―

However, as Australia transitions to renewable energy, new firming capacity like the gas-fired power station proposed for Marulan will become increasingly essential to maintain grid reliability. Until large-scale long duration storage solutions become more widespread and cost-effective, gas-fired power remains one of the most practical options to retire coal and support the build out of renewables.β€―

How many landowners are impacted by the pipeline?

Four landowners are directly involved in relation to the proposed pipeline. This includes two landowners who are currently developing energy projects, and two private landowners.

We are actively engaging with all landowners to establish voluntary access and easement agreements. It’s important to note that any land acquisition, should it be required, is solely a matter for the NSW Government and not part of our current approach.

Will this create a stranded asset?

Noβ€”the Marulan Gas Fired Power Station is not expected to become a stranded asset. It is being designed as a flexible, fast-start plant to provide backup power during peak demand, low renewable output, or unexpected outages. Unlike traditional baseload generators, it will operate only when needed, making it a valuable support for a grid increasingly powered by wind and solar.β€―β€― β€―

As Australia transitions to renewable energy, firming capacity like this will remain essential to maintain grid reliability. Until large-scale storage solutions become more widespread and cost-effective, gas-fired power remains one of the most practical and lower-emission options.β€― β€―

The Marulan plant may also be adaptable in future to use cleaner fuels such as hydrogen, helping extend its usefulness over time. This makes it a targeted and transitional asset, designed to meet short- and medium-term needs without becoming obsolete as the energy mix evolves.β€―
